In the past, people believed in evil spirits and witches whom they thought were wandering around the earth. Sometimes they would light bonfires on 31st October in order to scare the evil spirits away. We also are led to believe that folk dressed themselves up in scary costumes in order to mix in with the witches, so an evil spirit wouldn’t spot you.

When you go out to play “trick or treat” this Halloween, give a thought to your distant relations who were doing the same thing over two thousand years ago.
In Scotland, the children call it “Guising” it’s almost the same as the “trick or treat” that’s done in the United States, but in stead of playing a trick, they go along armed with a musical instrument or a poem, song or joke ready to read out.
They only ever go inside a house where they know the people inside, very often the homes who will be ready to dish out the “treats” will have a lit pumpkin sat at the front door.
Normally the children go around in a group or three or four and when you have “performed” as a reward they receive a “treat”. If you are the stay-at-homes who will be dishing out the “treats” then Candy apples are good to give.
Some small tangerines or popcorn is traditional. Beware of giving nuts to young children.

Halloween costumes don’t have to cost a lot to be fun and scary. Using the well known old white sheet can be re-invented by tearing it into strips and wrapping it around your little one like a mummy. Even the head can be covered. Leave plenty of room for breathing and munching!
Another way to dress the kids up this Halloween as cheaply as possible it to use an old black jumper and leggings and use some child friendly water proof white paint and just paint on top some skeleton bones to make a superb Skeleton Costume.
